It’s the posture – a lot of women I’ve met in Sub-Saharan Africa have amazing posture, and it’s amazing what it does to project elegance and confidence. It really makes me try to stand up straighter when I’m around them, though!
My theory is it’s because women so often carry things on their head in Sub-Saharan Africa – it’s like an all-day charm school. They typically don’t steady the objects with their hand either, so an upright posture is a must.
A friend of mine was teaching in Ghana a few years back and one day, she handed a small workbook, the size of a magazine, to one of her 13 year old pupils. The girl shrugged, put the workbook on her head, and walked off home.
