So you disagree with the Genevan convention? Controversial, but fair enough.
I’m not American, but if it’s really true that being morally just fills you guys with disgust rather than pride, then maybe it is true that you’re not ready to be civilized just yet. You’ve kept up apperances long enough, but I guess being a nation built on relatively recent conquest, genocide and destruction does give you a bit of a handicapped start. Apparently 300 years is not quite enough to build a civilized society. If the Jihadist countries are any indication, it might even be a futile exercise. Maybe you’re right, maybe wrath and asserting your superiority are too deeply ingrained in your national character, and the only way you can ‘defend’ (read: safe face) against foreign religious fervor is to drag those with different beliefs through the street, bloodied and vulnerable. But if you think that will make jihadists cower, back off and reevaluate their priorities, you’re dead wrong. At this point it would pretty much take another genocide to rid yourself of the target you painted on your head. Shock and awe will just get their blood pumping.
Sardonicness aside, I do believe that computer games and decades of marketing promising us security (and sex) through consuming have made us weak. I’ve played games with Syrians during their revolution, and Ukrains while their land was being seized and I wondered if I would be playing games when my freedom is being challenged. Maybe it even is right now, and I’m doing nothing to stop, refusing to see it. So I guess we do have some common ground somewhere.
