Upvote for knowing your stuff. I used to live in Uganda and am constantly trying to study African history, culture, etc. You’re absolutely right concerning the Hutu and Tutsi divide–sadly, (one prominent theory) the Germans and Belgians largely fabricated these distinctions and created two ethnic sects from the one Bantu group. I’m always fascinated by how 99% of modern occurrences in sub-Saharan Africa are utterly tied to the legacy of colonialism. The Rwanda genocide is sadly no exception.
Many people are unfamiliar with the Burundi genocide led by Tutsis in the early 70s. It’s tragic how these civil wars, divides, and genocidal acts are indirectly (or directly, depending on who you talk with) the result of colonialist policies and involvements that played people as pawns and maintained stratification and ethnic hierarchies as a means to control and subjugate a population.
