That there are no black people or any other race other than white in *Frozen*… and it makes absolutely no sense why they *would* be there.
It’s a story written by a Danish author in the 1840’s, using Scandinavian mythology and characters with Danish names and influences. Of course the people in it are going to be white because the majority of people living in Denmark during Hans Christian Andersen’s time were white.
If there were any black characters in hs story, you would be sure he would mention it since it was an incredibly rare sight in North Europe at the time.
You don’t need to shoehorn people of different races into places where they usually wouldn’t be found, especially in Europe, which compared to the US is not as racially diverse. It’s dishonest and paints a false picture of how things actually worked.
Most black people in Denmark during that time were most likely servants and then usually to royalty who might’ve had stocks in Africa. But if Frozen did show a few black servants here and there (seeing as Elsa is royalty), people would complain that it is a racist depiction of black people. So… would it be racist to show black people as slaves in 1840’s USA?
The Danes did have a small colonial empire and exploited Africa like other European Colonial empires, but it was overshadowed by the sheer power and size of compeeting empires.
Europe did not have a massive number of slaves as The US did. Even today in many European countries, some people live their entire lives without seeing a black person. How do you think things looked like in the 1830’s, where racial relations were even worse than they are today.
Yes, i understand that people want representation. That’s awesome and i agree that reprsentation is important. But Disney was adapting a story, written by a white person, about other white people, during a time where most people in that country were white, and he took inspiration from Norse mythology, the mythology of white people living in Denmark and Scandinavia.
Representation, fair and equal representation has to be done so that it makes sense, while also advancing the way people of different races are portrayed in culture.
Shoe-horning them in, won’t help.
Also it’s really fucking hard to talk about any of this without sounding like a White Rights Activist o_o
